"Made in the Shade" 2021 Keeps It Cool
For thirty years a collaborative of nonprofits that serve people with disabilities have hosted “Made in the Shade,” a community celebration and fundraiser of about 800 people, and White Bear Lake’s own PAI is one of the premier partnering organizations. The walk, run and roll event happened at Bde Maka Ska in Minneapolis for several years and was slated for a live version this year after a virtual setup in 2020. Rising delta variant case counts prompted the organizers to shift away from a large gathering again this year.
The change of plans did not thwart PAI from doing something inspiring though. On Friday, September 17th, PAI hosted a super-fun morning of recreation at three of its program sites and where you could find people engaged in outdoor art activities, contests, games, and going around the course, of course!
Jackie Shelstad, mother of PAI participant, Brooke, said “While we enjoy getting together with the larger Twin Cities community of people living with disabilities, there was a huge silver lining to having an event like this at PAI’s locations because all the people enrolled in their day programs were able to participate. Getting into the city is sometimes difficult for transportation and family and care provider schedules. We are happy that PAI is a reliable resource every day, and we very much appreciate the extra special ones!”
